This is our shout out to a particularly handsome and ancient breed, and one of the most popular memes of 2013.
Breed name: Shiba Inu
AKC Classification: Non-Sporting Group
In Japanese, the word “Inu” means "dog". “Shiba” means “brushwood”, a type of small tree or shrub whose leaves turn red in the autumn. This may refer to the dog’s color and/or or his hunting terrain. In an old Nagano dialect, the word “shiba” also had the connotation of “small” - so, the Shiba is sometimes called the “Little Brushwood Dog”.
The Shiba nearly became extinct during World War II because of a food shortages and a distemper epidemic; after the war, the few remaining bloodlines were combined to produce the breed known today.
