One of the oldest of the herding breeds, the Rottweiler’s history dates to the mastiff-type drover dogs used by the Romans to drive and guard cattle.
Breed name: Rottweiler
AKC Classification: Working Group
The breed gets its name from the German town of Rottweil, where in the Middle Ages they came to be called Rottweiler Metzgerhunds (butcher dogs) because traveling butchers used them to guard money pouches (which were fastened around their necks).
Black penciling on all the toes is one of the AKC standards for this breed.
