Greyhound-type dogs have been around for thousands of years, and are well-represented in art ranging from Egyptian tombs to Renaissance paintings to modern advertising. If you had to pick one dog to call a "speed breed", the Greyhound would be at the very top of the list.
Breed name: Greyhound
AKC Classification: Hound Group
Greyhounds can reach speeds of 40+ miles per hour, and are considered the fastest dogs in the world.
A greyhound has more red blood cells than other breeds, and is often used as a universal blood donor. They also have other physiological traits that are unique to the breed.
The first winner of Best of Show (1928) at Crufts was a Greyhound named Primley Sceptre.
