Nancy Paolucci first came to CanineLink as a student in 2012; fast forward two years, and she's now the Executive Director! (Obviously, we love her.)

Which dog has taught you the most, and why?

Abby, my English Setter mix, has taught me the most out of all of my dog, hands down. I didn’t grow up with dogs; in fact, I was always a little afraid of them. When Abby first arrived not only was she my first dog, but she was my first real encounter with a rescue dog. From the start, I had to learn the basics of not only caring for and training a dog, but also how to deal with one that came with some additional baggage. Abby has taught me that it is ok to make mistakes, especially in training (unfortunately, trying out a prong collar and a shock collar). She has also taught me patience. She is moderately anxious, a bit obsessive compulsive, and can bark you out of a room for no reason! Abby is the reason that I picked up my first Patricia McConnell book and the reason that I am at CanineLink today.

How do you "pay it forward"?

I started volunteering years ago at a small humane society in Indiana. I knew I needed experience around dogs that were not my own and this offered me tons of it! From that connection in Indiana, my network of rescue groups expanded. I get calls from the director of the humane society asking me to help place dogs that are in desperate need. Because of this, I have not only created relationships with rescues around Chicago, but I have also fostered and adopted two of my own dogs.

What is the biggest unexpected benefit of your CanineLink education?

The biggest unexpected benefit of my CanineLink education is the network of incredibly talented and intelligent individuals that I have met and get to work with on a daily basis. I went into the classes hoping to gain knowledge and possibly a future career, but I did not expect to meet so many amazing people. Through these individuals I am continuing to learn and grow as a trainer, dog advocate, and professional. Not only that, but I get to work at the best place….CanineLink!
