Every year when I go to Halloween costume contests for dogs (I got to judge one this year!), I secretly hope that I’m going to see a Pug dressed as a baked potato.

AKC Classification: Toy Group

AKC ranking: #31 in 2013, #30 in 2012, #15 in 2008

  • According to the American Kennel Club, the Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs (dating back to at least 400 B.C.)

  • China is the earliest known source for Pugs; they were popular pets in the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet.

  • In the sixteenth century, Pugs were brought from China to Europe, where they were popularized by the royal families of the Netherlands and United Kingdom.
