A Good Education

We’re six weeks into another session of Behavior Fundamentals, and, as always, I’m thrilled by the changes that I see in the students as they start to internalize new information. Seeing the “a-ha!” moments when another piece of the puzzle falls into place never gets old.
Everyone who signs up for the Behavior Fundamentals class has some sort of compelling interest in dogs. Whether they are career changers, dog trainers, or just people who find Canis lupus familiaris fascinating, they are all here because of dogs. Most of them have, or have had, dogs, and come into the class with a better-than-basic knowledge set about caring for and living with canine companions.
But somewhere along the line in Behavior Fundamentals (usually after the first couple of dog park or play group observations), everyone in the class starts to drastically differentiate themselves from “regular” dog owners. This happens because they are taking theoretical and written knowledge, using it in real life situations, and then having their observations analyzed by some of the best teachers in the industry. There is no substitute for this kind of thoughtful, professional interaction – you can read dozens of books, you can watch hundreds of videos, but the best way to really learn about dogs is to combine hands-on experience with sustained, knowledgeable instruction.
Even if you only take Behavior Fundamentals and don’t go on to Essential or Advanced Academy, the critical thinking ability and observational skills instilled during eight weeks of class can not only have a profound effect on your life with dogs, but also on your life in general. If you’re considering a new career in the pet industry, those eight weeks will put you head and shoulders above other job seekers; if you already work with dogs, your intrinsic value to both employers and clients will skyrocket. An investment in education is never wasted, and at only $985, it’s one of the best deals around.
