As you probably already know, I love going to the International Kennel Club dog show. Every year, the show draws thousands of entries from across the U.S. and Canada, and you can see representatives of just about every breed imaginable (as well as the sweatshirts, socks, and spangly t-shirts devoted to these breeds). Taking a group of students, alumni, and friends around to look at and discuss the breeds is so much fun, and I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to do this for five years in a row.
This year, we decided to shake things up a bit and have a pictorial scavenger hunt. The group divided into teams and searched for things like a black dog in a purple collar, a working breed dog displaying calming signals, a white dog in a tutu, and five dogs in topknots. Bonus points went to the team who got pictures with my favorite breed.
As an extra-special bonus, we got to see mayoral candidate Alderman Bob Fioretti (2nd Ward) talking to vendors, rescue groups, and pet owners. Alderman Fioretti is very involved with public policy regarding pets in Chicago; in fact, he’ll be holding a round table discussion about companion animals on Saturday, February 7, at 9:30 AM, 1043 W. Madison Avenue. All Chicagoans (and their socialized pets) are welcome to attend. If you have questions about dog parks, trap-neuter-release programs, Animal Care and Control, or anything else pet-related, this is the place to go. The discussion is scheduled to go on for as long as people have questions.
Next up – Westminster. I can’t wait!
