In honor of the delightful Miss P’s win at Westminster this week, here are a few fun facts about the Beagle.
Breed name: Beagle
AKC classification: Hound Group
AKC popularity ranking: #5
Beagles were originally bred to hunt hares and rabbits; the activity itself is known as “beagling”.
The American Kennel Club recognizes two separate varieties - 13” and 15”. The Canadian Kennel Club recognizes one type not to exceed 15”, and UK Kennel Club recognizes one type not to exceed 16”.
The Beagle Brigade is used to search for prohibited agricultural and other products at U.S. airports. The canine members of the teams are either donated by private owners and breeder or rescued from animal shelters.
Miss P is Canadian (from British Columbia), and her full official name is CH Tashtins Lookin’ for Trouble.
Miss P’s great-uncle, Uno, was the first beagle to win Best in Show at Westminster in 2008.
